club priority: training to become ocean sailers

Baltic, North See, Atlantic: For our yachts these are no unknown areas. With our two club owned yachts we show our flag regularly at many sailing events starting from the "Kieler Woche" and also on ocean regattas. Training and cruising complete our programme.
The club's purpose is to promote the youth and turn them into ambitious off-shore and ocean sailors. For this we communicate practical knowledge of sailing which will later enable the youth to take resonsibility as watch officer or skipper on our yachts. Of course the fun does not come to short: foreign harbours and far away dream cruising grounds are explored and many friendships formed on board.

A modern club with tradition

Nearly 100 years ago the HVS was founded by Albert Ballin, a ship owner from Hamburg, in order to send a competitiv yacht under the flag of Hamburg into the race against Kaiser Wilhelm''s yacht "Meteor". Within the club the crews were trained under the aspect of "youth fitness by off-shore sailing". With success: The emperor immediately recruited the first captain of the "Hamburg". Buisenessmen and ship owners supported the training on board our yachts in good old hanseatic tradition.

Apart from the usual sailing in the North See and in the Baltic the club yachts can look back on several Atlantic crossings and one circumnavigation.
In the year of the club''s centenary in 2003 a transatlantic regatta which will end in Hamburg is being organised by the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) for the HVS.
